Concrete driveways
The most common choice in Sydney. Reinforced concrete with a broom or trowel finish. Durable, low-maintenance and the cheapest per square metre of the poured options.

What pushes a quote higher
- Steep or sloped blocks — common across the Northern Beaches, the Inner West and the North Shore. Steep sites often need concrete pumped rather than poured direct.
- Restricted access — narrow side passages and tight frontages mean more work by hand.
- Removing an old driveway — demolition and disposal are charged on top.
- Reactive clay soil — parts of Western Sydney sit on clay that shrinks and swells with moisture. It moves slabs. A quote that ignores it is a quote to worry about.
- Drainage — if water runs toward the house or the garage, that has to be solved in the design, not afterwards.
A quote well below these ranges usually means something has been left out. Ask what concrete strength is being used and whether the crossover is included.
Council approval: the part most homeowners miss
If your work touches the crossover — the strip between your property boundary and the road — you need council approval before anything starts. This is separate from any DA or CDC for the house.
What's involved
- It's a Section 138 approval under the Roads Act, generally lodged through the NSW Planning Portal.
- You'll need a site plan showing the driveway and crossover relative to your boundary, with widths, lengths and setback distances.
- Most Sydney councils require a minimum 25MPa concrete strength for residential crossings, and several now ask for 32MPa because modern SUVs are heavier.
- Requirements vary by LGA. Your council's rules are the ones that apply.
Why it matters: work done on the crossover without approval can be ordered removed at your expense. Ask any contractor whether the crossover is included in their quote and who is lodging the application — the answer differs between companies, and it's a common source of surprise cost.

For the driveway inside your boundary, usually not. For the crossover between your boundary and the road, yes — a Section 138 approval under the Roads Act.
What's the difference between concrete and exposed aggregate?
Exposed aggregate is concrete with the surface washed back to expose the stone. It grips better, hides marks better, and costs a bit more.
Can I just resurface instead of replacing?
Often, if the existing slab is structurally sound. Cracking from soil movement usually means replacement; surface wear usually doesn't. Worth having assessed before you budget for a full rebuild.
How much does a double driveway cost in Sydney?
Roughly $4,500–$8,000 for about 40m² in plain concrete. Decorative finishes and difficult sites push it higher.
